Perez secures two-year F1 contract extension with Red Bull
Sergio Perez has signed a two-year deal to remain with Red Bull until the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season, cementing his partnership with Max Verstappen for the next two years.
Contract extension
Sergio Perez has secured a two-year contract extension with Red Bull Racing, keeping him at the Milton Keynes-based team until the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The 34-year-old Mexican's renewal will see him continue as Max Verstappen's teammate for six consecutive seasons, spanning F1's new regulations cycle.
Red Bull's decision
Despite a recent dip in form raising doubts, Red Bull has opted for continuity and stability by retaining Perez amid a volatile driver market.
Team Principal Christian Horner emphasized the importance of the decision, stating,
"Continuity and stability are important for the team, and both Checo and Max are a successful and robust partnership."
Early season performance
Perez had a strong start to the 2024 season, securing three runner-up finishes in the first four races in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Japan, followed by a podium in China.
This early momentum played a crucial role in Red Bull's decision to extend his contract.
Perez's reaction
Expressing his delight, Perez said,
"I am delighted to be staying here to continue our journey together and contribute to this team's great history for two more years. Being part of the team is an immense challenge, and one I love."
Driver market impact
The news confirms earlier reports that Carlos Sainz, the departing Ferrari driver, is out of the running for a Red Bull seat.
Sainz must now decide between Audi's offer or a potential move to Williams.
Additionally, Red Bull's in-form driver Yuki Tsunoda is likely to remain at RB for another year.
Harmonious partnership
While Perez initially aimed to challenge Verstappen for championships, Horner credited him for being less fixated on his teammate's performances this year, favoring intra-team harmony.
However, questions remain about Perez's ability to help Red Bull defend their constructors' titles as rivals Ferrari and McLaren close the gap.
Horner's confidence
Despite recent struggles, Horner expressed confidence in Perez, stating,
"We are confident in Checo and look forward to his return to proven form and performance that we so often see."
