Strengthening operations and human resources

Villarreal, a veteran of the automotive industry with two decades at Goodyear, steps into the role of general manager.

Reporting directly to Ben Sulayem and the President of the Senate, he will oversee the FIA's operational and financial performance.

A key focus of his role will be ensuring that member interests remain at the forefront of decision-making processes.

The human resources department sees reinforcement with the appointment of Malhame as Senior HR Director.

Her background includes senior positions at global corporations such as Honeywell and Bristol Myers Squibb.

Malhame's expertise will be instrumental in guiding HR operations and developing broader organizational strategies.

Ben Sulayem's vision for the FIA

These appointments align with Ben Sulayem's vision for a more financially stable and goal-oriented FIA.

The president expressed his enthusiasm for the new team members, stating,

"With Alberto's vast leadership experience, I am confident he will drive sustainability in our financial performance, governance and operations and deliver value for our members."

He further emphasized the importance of human capital, adding,

"Alessandra brings a wealth of HR expertise to the federation. I am confident she will ensure the development of our most precious commodity – our people."

Changing of the guard

While these appointments signal progress in Ben Sulayem's transformation agenda, they come amidst a period of significant turnover within the organization.

The past year has seen several high-profile departures, including director of communications Luke Skipper and secretary general of mobility Jacob Bangsgaard just last week.

The exodus extends to key technical roles, with sporting director Steve Nielsen and single-seater technical director Tim Goss both stepping down last winter.

Additionally, Deborah Mayer departed from her position as head of the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission.

Further changes in early 2023 saw the departure of governance and regulatory director Pierre Ketterer and head of commercial legal affairs Edward Floydd.

Perhaps most notably, Natalie Robyn, who held the distinction of being the FIA's first CEO, left her position in May.

A controversial path forward

Ben Sulayem's approach to restructuring the FIA has not been without controversy.

His decisive actions have put him at odds with various stakeholders within the motorsport community.

As the organization continues to evolve under his leadership, the impact of these latest appointments on the FIA's direction and its relationships within the wider Formula 1 ecosystem remains to be seen.
