Alpine announces Oliver Oakes as new F1 team principal
Alpine appoints 36-year-old Oliver Oakes as new F1 team principal. The former Hitech boss brings a wealth of motorsport experience to the role, aiming to lead Alpine to greater competitiveness.
Alpine has announced Oliver Oakes as its new team principal, effective after the summer break.
The appointment of the 36-year-old Hitech F2 and F3 boss marks a significant shift for the French outfit, signaling a clear intent to inject fresh energy and perspective into its operations.
A youthful injection of leadership
Oakes' ascension to the role places him as the second-youngest team principal in the modern era of Formula 1, following in the footsteps of Christian Horner, who took the reins at Red Bull at the age of 31 in 2005.
This move underscores Alpine's commitment to embracing new talent and innovative thinking at the highest levels of team management.
Luca de Meo, Renault CEO, emphasized the significance of this appointment, stating,
"It is a pleasure to welcome Oli to the team and for him to become one of the youngest team principals that this sport has ever seen. "
"This team is being built for future success and this is highlighted by Oli's appointment in a senior role."
A wealth of experience despite youth
Despite his relatively young age, Oakes brings a rich tapestry of motorsport experience to Alpine.
A former world karting champion, he has led Hitech to victories across various racing categories.
This diverse background is expected to be a valuable asset as he takes on the challenges of Formula 1.
Oakes expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, saying,
"I am extremely grateful to Luca de Meo and Flavio Briatore for this opportunity to lead BWT Alpine F1 Team back to competitiveness. "
"The team has talented people and excellent resources at its core, and I am confident that we can accomplish a great deal together during the remainder of this season and the longer term."
The decision to bring Oakes on board was not made lightly.
Endorsed by both de Meo and F1 advisor Flavio Briatore, it represents a calculated move to infuse the team with new energy and ideas.
Briatore, known for his keen eye for talent, commented on the appointment:
"Oli is highly talented with a great record of leadership and success in racing."
" His move into this role is a great example of the strength and belief we have in our team and by young, upcoming people."
As Oakes prepares to take the helm after the summer break, replacing the outgoing Bruno Famin, expectations are high.
The team is clearly banking on Oakes' ability to leverage Alpine's existing resources and talent to push the outfit up the grid and into contention for race wins.
De Meo's closing remarks encapsulate the team's aspirations:
"We look forward to harnessing his enthusiasm, energy and passion for racing and realising that mindset across the entire team."
