How did Verstappen clinch victory from McLaren at the Spanish GP?
Max Verstappen clinches Spanish GP victory despite McLaren's strong challenge. Mercedes returns to form with a podium finish, while Ferrari faces setbacks.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen secured his seventh win of the 2024 season at the Spanish Grand Prix, fending off a late charge from McLaren's Lando Norris.
The race highlighted McLaren's emerging threat to Red Bull's dominance, Mercedes' improving form, and Ferrari's ongoing struggles with their upgrade package
Start and Early Lead Changes
The race began with a surprise as Mercedes' George Russell seized the lead from third on the grid, overtaking both Verstappen and pole-sitter Norris.
Russell's bold move saw him dive left to take the racing line into the first corner, gaining momentum to cruise around the outside of his rivals.
However, Verstappen's superior pace soon became evident as he reclaimed the lead on lap 3 with a decisive DRS-assisted move.
"I think what made the race was the beginning," Verstappen said. "When I took the lead and then had to drive quite a defensive race, especially on deg."
Mclaren's Questionable Strategy
McLaren's attempt to challenge Red Bull's dominance became clear as the race progressed.
The team opted for a longer first stint for Norris, creating a tyre offset against Verstappen.
This strategy allowed Norris to close the gap in the latter part of the race, setting up a tense finale.
Verstappen pitted at the end of lap 17 to switch from softs to mediums, while Norris stayed out for an additional six laps.
This tactic ensured Norris's mediums were fresher for the crucial final stint.
Despite the pressure, Verstappen managed his lead carefully, crossing the line 2.2 seconds ahead of Norris.
"It's just managing the tyres," Verstappen explained. "They get very hot around here with the high-speed corners. It was a management race throughout."
Top Teams' Performance
McLaren's strong pace was evident, but a suboptimal start and strategy prevented Norris from challenging for the win.
Nevertheless, their performance signals a potential threat to Red Bull's dominance.
Mercedes showed improved consistency, with Lewis Hamilton securing his first podium of the season and George Russell finishing fourth.
Hamilton's longer stints allowed him to benefit from fresher soft tyres in the final laps, enabling him to overtake Russell with 15 laps remaining.
Ferrari faced difficulties, with an incident between Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc potentially costing them a podium opportunity.
Leclerc managed to finish fifth after a late charge on soft tyres, while Sainz came home in sixth.
Further Down the Field
Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren finished seventh, while Sergio Perez recovered from 11th on the grid to claim eighth with a three-stop strategy.
The Alpine duo of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10, providing a vital boost to their team's constructor championship efforts.
With McLaren's recent performance gain, questions arise about whether Norris is becoming a genuine threat to Verstappen's title defence.
