F1 Round-Up: Hamilton speaks about FIA vs Wolfs, FIA Gala, AlphaTauri's changes
Lewis Hamilton blasts the FIA's "unacceptable" probe of Toto and Susie Wolff. FIA GAla and AlphaTauri also confirms a shift away from all-rookie lineups in 2024.
Lewis Hamilton calls out FIA over "Unacceptable" Wolff investigation
Lewis Hamilton issued scathing criticism of Formula 1's governing body over its "unacceptable" launch and swift conclusion of an investigation into Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and his wife Susie.
Hamilton said the FIA's actions in questioning Susie Wolff's "integrity" as managing director of the F1 Academy for female drivers was "disappointing" and done "without evidence."
Mercedes has threatened legal action, saying they were "in active legal exchange" with the FIA and "reserved all rights" while seeking "transparency" into why the investigation occurred.
Susie Wolff also condemned the FIA's "unfounded press release" and resulting damage to her reputation, stating "this episode has taken place without transparency and accountability."
The saga underscores growing tensions between F1 teams and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who Hamilton said seems intent on hindering diversity and inclusion efforts within the sport. It could mark "the beginning of the end for him," one senior F1 figure stated.
FIA Gala
At the FIA's annual prize gala, 2023 triple world champion Max Verstappen emotionally reflected on standing atop the Abu Dhabi podium one final time in the dominant Red Bull RB19, knowing he'd never drive that car in anger again.
After a stellar debut season at McLaren, Rookie of the Year Oscar Piastri also hoped he'd claimed that trophy for the last time.
In a video message, Fernando Alonso relished his fiercely competitive wheel-to-wheel battle with Sergio Perez in Brazil that won Action of the Year.
Lewis Hamilton showed grace despite recent events, praising rival Verstappen and Red Bull for "raising the bar" while motivating his Mercedes squad to close the gap next season.
AlphaTauri confirms shift away from all-rookie line-ups
AlphaTauri CEO Peter Bayer stated the team will not field two rookie drivers again given the clear benefits of pairing youth alongside experience.
Daniel Ricciardo will bring his vast F1 knowledge to mentor teammate Yuki Tsunoda in 2024.
Under a new name sans the AlphaTauri brand, the team will work in tight synergy with Red Bull Racing to push for 5th in the Constructors' Championship by maximizing car part commonalities.
