Andretti ramps up F1 entry bid with Pat Symonds hire
Andretti Cadillac bolsters its push for an F1 grid slot by onboarding former F1 chief technical officer Pat Symonds, signaling its aggressive pursuit despite initial rejection.
Andretti Global has appointed Pat Symonds, the former Formula 1 chief technical officer (CTO), as an Executive Engineering Consultant.
This high-profile hire comes as the American racing powerhouse intensifies its efforts to secure an entry into the Formula 1 grid, partnering with GM brand Cadillac.
Symonds, who played a pivotal role in shaping F1's technical regulations for 2022 and 2026, will bring his wealth of experience to Andretti's recently established UK base in Silverstone after completing a gardening leave period.
Bolstering technical expertise
Michael Andretti, the team principal, expressed excitement about Symonds' addition, stating,
"Pat's keen understanding of aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, and Formula 1 power units will be instrumental as we continue to build a competitive team."
Andretti believes Symonds' expertise and his decision to join the effort "speaks volumes" about the team's potential.
Symonds will reunite with his former colleague from Benetton and Renault, Nick Chester, who currently serves as Andretti Cadillac's technical director.
Chester emphasized the value Symonds brings, saying,
"Pat will bring expertise across technical areas and team operations that will help us develop the team."
Persistent pursuit despite initial setback
Despite being denied entry for the 2026 season, Andretti Cadillac has remained undeterred in its pursuit of an F1 entry.
The team has established a dedicated headquarters in Silverstone and embarked on an aggressive recruitment drive, with Symonds' appointment representing a significant coup.
F1 has left the door open for a new attempt in 2028, with Andretti Cadillac exploring the possibility of developing bespoke GM power units.
The team's persistent efforts have garnered support from various quarters, including members of the United States Congress, who have invoked antitrust laws and demanded answers from F1 and its owner, Liberty Media, regarding the rejection.
Symonds' illustrious career in F1
Symonds' credentials in Formula 1 are unquestionable.
He was an integral part of the Benetton team that won championships with Michael Schumacher in the mid-1990s.
After the team's transition to Renault, Symonds remained until the 2008 Singapore Crashgate scandal, following which he took on consultancy roles with Virgin and Williams before assuming the CTO position at F1 in 2017.
With Symonds' wealth of experience and Andretti's unwavering determination, the team's bid for an F1 entry in 2028 has received a significant boost, setting the stage for an intriguing battle ahead.
